Manchester United Aim for Silverware Amidst Domestic Struggles
Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has admitted that even Europa League glory won’t redeem the club’s poor season—but believes it could trigger important long-term changes.
United are currently languishing in 14th place in the Premier League with just 39 points from 34 matches. Despite their poor league form, the club remains in contention for a major trophy and Champions League qualification through the Europa League.
“Everybody knows that it’s really important for our season,” said Amorim ahead of Thursday’s semi-final first leg against Athletic Club. “We know nothing is going to save our season, but this can be huge.”
Victory Offers More Than a Trophy
United pulled off a dramatic comeback in the quarter-finals, scoring twice in extra-time to eliminate Lyon 7-6 on aggregate. But Amorim insists that success in Europe would be more of a reset button than a cover-up.
“It’s not going to change our problems,” he said. “It’s a shortcut—one that brings Champions League football, more revenue, but it won’t erase the underlying issues.”
The Portuguese boss, who took over from Erik ten Hag in November 2024, stressed the need for a broader transformation: “We need consistency, smart recruitment, a better academy structure. That’s how we take this club back to the top.”
Injury Concerns Ahead of Bilbao Clash
United will be without Amad Diallo and Matthijs de Ligt, both of whom are not yet match-fit after ankle injuries. Spanish hosts Athletic will also miss their top scorer Oihan Sancet.
Diallo has been sidelined since February, while De Ligt has missed a month. Amorim is expected to name a similar side to the one that beat Lyon, with Dominic Solanke likely leading the line again.
Amorim Responds to Champions League Fairness Debate
With both United and Spurs sitting in the bottom half of the Premier League, critics have questioned whether underperforming domestic sides should earn a Champions League place via European competition.
“Maybe it’s not fair, but these are the rules,” Amorim said. “It gives value to the Europa League, and if the opportunity is there, we will fight for it.”
The Europa League final will be held in Bilbao on 21 May, adding extra motivation for Amorim’s side to get past Athletic Club over the two legs.
