Arteta Provides Optimistic Update Ahead of Season Run-In
Arsenal midfielder Jorginho may yet feature again this season after suffering what is believed to be a punctured lung in April, according to manager Mikel Arteta.
The 33-year-old vice-captain was forced off late in a 1-1 draw against Brentford on April 12, initially with what appeared to be a chest issue. While the club has not confirmed the specifics, sources suggest the injury involved minor damage to lung tissue that required a period of monitored rest and rehabilitation.
“It got a bit more complicated than expected,” said Arteta in his pre-match press conference ahead of Saturday’s clash with Bournemouth. “But he’s recovering well. There’s a real chance he could play again before the end of the season.”

Contract Expiring as Season Nears Its End
Jorginho’s future at the Emirates remains uncertain. His contract is due to expire this summer, with no extension agreed so far. The Italian international has made 78 appearances for Arsenal since joining from Chelsea in January 2023 for £12 million.
Arteta praised his influence off the pitch, describing him as a “leader in the dressing room” and a “model professional” during his recovery process.
Havertz Also Making Progress
Meanwhile, German forward Kai Havertz is also in contention for a late-season return after undergoing surgery on a hamstring injury earlier this year. The former Chelsea man sustained a significant tear during Arsenal’s mid-season camp in Dubai in February.
Initial fears suggested Havertz would miss the remainder of the campaign, but recent scans have shown faster-than-expected healing. He is now expected to be fit for a potential Champions League final appearance — if Arsenal can overturn a 1-0 deficit in their semi-final second leg against Paris Saint-Germain next week.
Crunch Time for Arsenal
Arsenal’s injury news comes at a pivotal moment in their season. With Premier League hopes fading, the Europa League and Champions League represent the club’s best chance of silverware. Arteta will be hoping both Jorginho and Havertz can return to action at just the right time.
