Coach Prepares Honest Message at Old Trafford
Ruben Amorim has confirmed he will deliver an on-pitch apology to Manchester United fans after the club’s final Premier League game of the season against Aston Villa on Sunday.
United are closing the book on one of their worst domestic campaigns since their 1973-74 relegation, compounded by a Europa League final defeat to Tottenham that confirmed they’ll miss out on European football next season.
Despite widespread fan frustration at the Glazer family’s ownership and recent job cuts ordered by minority shareholder Sir Jim Ratcliffe, Amorim insists the players and staff owe it to the supporters to conduct a traditional lap of appreciation at Old Trafford.

‘It Will Be an Apology’
The 40-year-old Portuguese coach, who took over in November, has struggled to turn things around, managing just six Premier League victories to date. Speaking ahead of the final game, he acknowledged the need for direct communication with the fans.
“It will be an apology, I think that’s clear,” said Amorim. “I don’t have time for an explanation. I will be honest with the fans and say what is in my mind—and especially my heart.”
United supporters are planning another pre-match protest march on Sunday, highlighting growing unrest over the club’s direction. Yet Amorim remains committed to transparency and accountability.
Post-Match Address a Must
“It’s tradition and we have to face it,” he added. “It will be the biggest mistake if we don’t do that. If ever there was a season that we need to do it, it’s this one.”
While Amorim has not yet finalised the exact words for his end-of-season address, he promised it would be heartfelt and genuine—something many fans may find refreshing after such a turbulent year.
The final whistle against Aston Villa will mark the end of a painful chapter at Old Trafford. Whether it sparks a new beginning under Amorim remains to be seen.
